Crises of Meaning

Sunday neurosis

Depression that appears when the weekday rush stops and a person comes face to face with the emptiness of their own life.

Definition

Sunday neurosis (Ger. Sonntagsneurose) is a kind of depressive low that affects people when the weekday rush ends and, on Sunday or on holiday, they become aware of the lack of content in their lives.

A mask of the vacuum

It is one of the typical forms of the existential vacuum. Work and busyness drown out the question of meaning, while free time reveals it. People entering retirement often go through a similar crisis.

What helps

Logotherapy does not recommend “filling time”, but looking for what for - tasks, relationships and experiences that give time its value (three paths to meaning).
